4 FESTIVALS
a)Play of the Year 15/16
There are 3 entries so far:-Jerusalem performed by Theatre imp, Move Over Mrs Markham by Ratae Cooperative Players, and Steel Magnolias by Whetstone Drama Group. The latter two are groups from Leicestershire who have recently joined NANDA. Bonington Players will be entering Beyond Reasonable Doubt and this will be adjudicated by Stephen Godward.
There followed a discussion on an issue which had occurred over the summer break, namely the use of professionals in amateur productions. RW said that the definition of professional was if an actor's primary source of income was professional acting work - this applied to all drama associations. There then followed a discussion on the use of a professional director by amateur groups. AETF have looked into this and the issue will be discussed at a meeting on 27 September. A change of rules would have to be referred to The National Trustees in London and was not NANDA's decision. Amateur/Professional status is not mentioned in NANDA's rules. It was agreed that we do not alter the rules for the 2015/16 season and discuss this issue at a later stage.
One group from last season's PoY competition had taken issue with certain comments made at the adjudication and subsequently at the adjudicator's speech at the dinner. The co-ordinator (JW) said that the issues raised would be borne in mind when considering future adjudications. Nothing could be done, however, about remarks made on the night.
RW made the point that the competition had become very popular in recent years and with this, more competitive. The original aim of the competition had been to help and advise actors and directors by offering constructive comments; there was now more interest in winning.
