Eric Chappell
We are delighted to welcome as our guest speaker Eric Chapell, author of the BAFTA award winning situation comedy series "Rising Damp".
He was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1933 and remained living close to Grantham all his life. In early life made much use of the local library.
Eric went on to study accountancy at college and became an auditor with the East Midlands Electricity Board, but left in 1973 to become a full time writer.
Chappell wrote the play The Banana Box first produced in 1970, which lead to the sitcom Rising Damp, which aired from 1974 to 1978 and won the 1978 BAFTA for Best Situation Comedy.
His also wrote television series Only When I Laugh, The Bounder, Duty Free, Singles, Haggard, and Home to Roost and two dozen plays.
Touchwood Group in Edwinstowe staged the world premier of "Haggard" by Eric Chappell, based on characters by Michael Green (Art of Course Acting, Collier's Tuesday Tea, Streuth etc) with Eric in attendance.
